The Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ

The Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ

This year, Becky and I have been enjoying Holy Week Services, especially Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and tomorrow’s celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection.

On Maundy Thursday, I had a special experience of vicariously sitting with Jesus at His last supper. I must admit, I really wished I could have my feet washed by Him, but it is not a common practice in churches today. But Maundy Thursday was a chance to experience the questions, doubts, and wonder of it all at His table. Communion at worship took me to the Upper Room to experience His last night with His disciples.

On Good Friday, I saw again why it’s called “good.” It was incredibly and undescribably painful for Him, but because of what He did for us, it was good for us. He fulfilled His purpose, offering salvation to all who accept His sacrifice in our place, thus forgiving our sins. Yet, in worship, as I listened to “SEVEN LAST WORDS” by Michael John Trotta, I wept deeply. Why? Because it brought me to the foot of the Cross, and I felt like a bystander, thinking and knowing that I helped put Him there because of my sin. But then I heard His words, forgiving those who were crucifying Him, a gift no one deserved….. forgiveness, but one I accepted.

This Holy Saturday holds a special place in my heart. It’s a day of darkness, as Jesus lay in the tomb, and I began to ponder our world, our fallen nature, and what our lives would have been like if Jesus had not risen from the dead. Through my Christian faith, God revealed that He didn’t stay in the grave but came out of that tomb that night. In fact, He rose from the dead on the Saturday after that Friday. The women came to the tomb to anoint His body in the early morning light, so He rose in the night. On Holy Saturday, I find myself wondering, where is He if He’s not in the tomb?

Well, all Christians celebrate His Resurrection. He was with the women and the disciples then, so He is now with us. He goes with us, and in His resurrection, we see the fulfillment of the Scriptures. What He said before His death was confirmed by His Resurrection. And so, I can sing triumphantly, the great Charles Wesley hymn: “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” and “Thine Is the Glory” by Edmond L. Budry.

And one last thing, about my worship this Holy Week. It reminded me of how wonderful it is to celebrate with others of like faith. We cry together, we celebrate together, we eat together, care for one another, and support one another. The Day of Resurrection reminds me of you and how thankful I am for you. May this day of celebration be a heart buoy that lifts you up, encourages you along, and adds the reality of the blessed hope in the midst of all the struggles that you face. And because of His Resurrection, we will also rise and to celebrate in eternity with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and with fellow believers. Hallelujah Amen!!!!
